Abstract
Overweight and obesity have become a global epidemic, including in India, posing significant health challenges and burden on healthcare systems. Conventional interventions, such as lifestyle modifications, pharmacological agents, and surgical procedures, have limitations and associated side effects. As a result, there is a growing interest in exploring alternative treatment options, including herbal therapies, which have been traditionally used for various health conditions. This review article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of promising herbal therapies for the treatment of overweight and obesity in India, supported by scientific evidence. The article begins by highlighting the global and national burden of overweight and obesity, specifically focusing on the challenges and health consequences faced by individuals in India. The prevalence rates of overweight and obesity in different regions of India are discussed, providing a comprehensive understanding of the current situation. Next, the article delves into the concept of herbal therapies which presents an extensive review of herbal therapies that have shown promise in the treatment of overweight and obesity. The scientific evidence supporting their efficacy and safety is discussed, including relevant clinical studies and trials. Finally the Challenges associated with the integration of herbal therapies into mainstream healthcare also discussed in this article. Overall, herbal therapies offer a potential alternative for overweight and obesity management in India, but more research is warranted to establish their efficacy, safety, and optimal use in clinical practice.
